Minister Heads to Dubai to Prove PM’s Commitment to Addressing Climate Change

DUBAI: The 28th United Nations Climate Change conference (COP28) is happening from November 30-December 12 in the United Arab Emirates. The Summit presents the opportunity for Heads of State and Government to signal their commitment to transform key climate related decisions into concrete actions and credible plans, and continue raising ambition to tackle climate change.

Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth said that his delegation is ready to present seven key achievements Cambodia has made towards addressing climate change. The Minister will present the information to more than 50,000 participants in Dubai.

Among the Kingdom’s achievements are the cancellation of a coal-fired power plant project and the construction of a new hydropower dam that will produce 1,000MW of clean electricity. The Minister also said that Cambodia plans to get 70% of its energy from renewable sources by 2028, mostly from solar, hydropower and wind.

The Minister of Environment and his delegation will also present the Cambodia Clean Strategy to reduce plastic bag pollution along with solid and liquid waste, which has already reached more than three million Cambodians. He will also highlight the Cambodia Green Strategy to plant at least one million trees per year to restore the country’s forest coverage by 60% by 2050. He will also reaffirm the government’s commitment to the ten-year ban on hydropower dams along the Mekong River in addition to the ban new coal-fired power plants.

The delegation hopes to use the summit to show the world Cambodia’s commitment to and active participation in preventing and solving the problem of climate change under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The country hopes to attract more tourism to a clean, green environment, leading to a sustainable and carbon neutral country by 2050.
